According to Wikipedia, the sign has multiple meanings and is used to shield from the evil eye, insult someone or refuse a request and is considered to be slightly obscene. The sign has been known at least since the Romans and is used in Southern Europe and the Mediterranean region. It is not known why the fig fruit is used to describe the sign.
